Mark your calendar now to celebrate Lavinia Fontana’s birthday on 24 August.

This is a detail from Fontana’s Venus & Cupid (1592). Venus holds Cupid’s arrow. She wears some great jewelry and a toga/veil (transluscent, of course) ornamented with gold thread.

Venus & Cupid is a portrait, believed to have been given by a young woman as an engagement present to her future husband.

Lavinia Fontana, a rough contemporary of Galileo, was a working mom; her husband Paolo helped out at the studio, and especially at home with their eleven children.
